Behind the Scenes: Creating the World of SOS Cabs
The journey of bringing SOS Cabs to life has been an adventure filled with creativity, challenges, and countless moments of inspiration. From the very beginning, our goal was to create a world that felt authentic to the real experiences of taxi drivers while adding our unique comedic twist. It helps that we lived it: Bilked is written from years behind the wheel, and most of what you'll see started life as a true story someone swore us to secrecy over.
Character Development
Each character in Bilked has been carefully crafted to represent different aspects of the taxi industry. Ellis Carter, our lottery winner turned cabbie, embodies the unexpected paths that lead people to this profession. Mick Ford, with his short fuse and family commitments, represents the everyday struggles of balancing work and home life. Around them sits a full ensemble — drivers, dispatchers and the family that owns the firm — each built with their own history, their own voice, and at least one secret the rank doesn't know about yet.
The World of Southend
Southend-on-Sea provides the perfect backdrop for our story. Its mix of seaside charm and urban grit creates an environment where anything can happen — and after years of driving its streets at every hour, we know exactly which corners of the town our stories belong to. The seafront at midnight, the rank on a dead January morning, the kebab shop that never closes: these aren't invented locations, they're memories with the names changed.
Building the World
The fictional SOS Cabs office has been designed to feel lived-in and authentic, with every detail considered — from the dispatch system and the drivers' rota on the wall to the back room that one member of staff has quietly converted into something else entirely. As an AI-assisted production, we build these spaces digitally, which means every peeling poster and tea-stained job sheet is a deliberate choice rather than a happy accident. Mostly deliberate, anyway.
With the full series now written and production underway for a late Autumn 2026 release, we'll be sharing much more of this world in the months ahead — including our new in-character interview series, where the cast of SOS Cabs finally get to speak for themselves.
